Blogging Anniversary - 10 years

A while ago I checked when I did my first blog post, in order to celebrate with an anniversary post. Well, that day came and went without any reaction from me. Better late than never, so here a reminder of my very first blog post from 24 October 2012.  The book was New Finnish Grammar  by Diego Marani. Marani is an Italian novelist, translator and newspaper columnist. While working as a translator for the European Union he invented a language ‘Europanto’ which is a mixture of languages and based on the common practice of word-borrowing usage of many EU languages. It was a suitable book to start with, being a book about letters, languages and memories. Classics on my table

I am now reading so many different books, that I never end any of them. I am quite frustrated about it, especially since I don't have so much time to read for the time being! So what do I do? I go to the public library in another errand, and come out with two books!! Grrr, especially since they are on loan for a limited time, I have to abandon the others to finish these two off. Nobody but myself to blame.

They are classics and have been on my reading list for quite some time, so I felt that I had to grab the opportunity. It is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. Looking forward reading both of them and hope to publish reviews soon.

Furthermore, I am reading a book to review for Endeavour Press, Path to the Silent Country: Charlotte Brontë's years of fame by Lynn Reid Banks. It is a continuation of The Dark Quartet: the story of the Brontës which I reviewed here. It was an excellent read, so looking forward to this one. Yes, I have started!

Visiting the Waterloo battle field the other day, I managed to buy a booklet guide to the battlefield by David Howarth. They also had a very interesting map on how Europe looked in 1815, to be explored more closely. This year, it is 200 years since the battle of Waterloo, which took place on 18 June 1815. There will be a lot of events here in Belgium to commemorate the battle. More posts on the booklet and the celebrations later on.

That was just a short update on my reading. The confused reading might just be a sign, that I want to read too many books. As always when you try to do several things at the same time, it always takes longer!

    I've listened to Lolita, read by Jeremy irons and it was one of the best audio experience of my life so far. Such a great book.

      So many people say this is a great book, with great prose. Looking forward reading it! How are you doing with your TBR books? It seems I set a list of books and then I go on reading other books! No disciplin at all!

This is one of those popular help yourself books that seems to overflow these days. However, it defies all the good advices we have been given during the last years, that is; stay positive. Manson says: "Let's be honest; sometimes things are fucked up and we have to live with it."  Right! That is life after all. "One day, in retrospect, the years of struggle will strike you as the most beautiful." Sigmund Freud  With this quote in mind Manson argues that values such as "pleasure, material success, always being right, staying positive", are poor guidelines for a persons life. After all, some of the greatest moments in our lives are " not  pleasant, not successful, not known, and not positive". How To Read Novels Like A Professor by Thomas C. Foster

I am not a professor in literature, but I would like to be. Unfortunately, this will never happen, so, I have to go along trying to read novels and literature like a professor. Thomas C. Foster's book is therefor a very useful tool. He has also written How To Read Literature Like A Professor , which sounds like another useful read. It is not only a book for readers. I would say it is also useful for aspring writers. How do you make a novel interesting? What does it have to contain? Who should be the narrator and what should he/she do? The content gives a hint on what makes up a good book.  Pickup Lines and Open(ing) Seductions, or Why Novels Have First Pages - are we not fascinated by how certain writers manage to hook you on the first sentence?
